Norsok R-003 is one of the technical standards within offshore containere, where a revision is expected in 2015. For users of offshore containers, it is important to know the updated requirements for safety hooks, colors, packaging, securing etc.
Soon the Christmas holiday is upon us. Here you will certainly be enjoying good meals and probably you will turn to the couch afterwards for a nap. Or maybe for reading an interesting book… or today’s newspaper… or even more exciting : a new version of one of many technical standards within offshore containers.
There are relatively few international standards for offshore containers, including DNV 2.7-1 and EN 12079. But in addition, there are several local standards. For example, the range of extra provisions assembled by experts in the Norwegian petroleum industry, known as NORSOK. In here, you will find the ideas and requirements which in Norway is believed to ensure the best combination of safety, value adding and cost effectiveness.
Even though there are constantly new developments and improvements in the industry, there are often several years between revisions of a given NORSOK standard. This makes each revision quite extensive, because a revision typically will try to include all new ideas and requirements. The goal is basically that you should be able to refer to NORSOK only.
R-003 to be revised – hooks, colors, packing, securing
When looking for what might be fascinating to read about before 2015, we would specifically recommend the standard for safe use of lifting equipment, NORSOK R-003. A safe lifting operation is when an “acceptable level of safety for personnel, the environment, and material assets” is achieved. A hearing has just been held for the draft version of a new NORSOK R-003 and the final revision is expected for release in spring of 2015. An example of a new requirement in this standard is that in case containers have doors, each of these must be double secured by securing handle with i.e. a locking lip and a safety hook. Although this requirement is only now appearing in the upcoming standard, it is already being enforced.
NORSOK R-003 should be studied closely by users of offshore containers. It contains many things about packing and securing of cargo, as well as specific details such as how to mark containers with a certain colour based on the year of the latest inspection.
